The Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise is fortunate to have 20% of our members who hail from Mexico and so we have chosen to focus our international sponsorship initiative for the next 3 years on a partnership with the Rotary Club of Leon to benefit the Leon Institute for Special Education (Instituto de Rehabilitacion y Educacion Especial). This institute is a very inspirational school that provides support for developmentally challenged individuals, their families, and the teachers and caregivers who assist them.
Founded in 1969 the school initially operated out of the clubhouse of the Rotary Club of Leon. It offers preschool, elementary school, and vocational training for individuals who are developmentally challenged. For many of these individuals learning a marketable skill, and being able to earn a living would not be possible if not for the training that this . Institute provides them. As well, all of the students come from impoverished families who do not have the financial means to send their loved ones for this vocational training.
Some of the skills that are taught are cooking, mop making, landscaping, photocopying, and computer basics - skills that we take for granted in everyday life. For these individuals though, these skills provide opportunities for them to become more productive member of their community.
On March 20, 2010 we are hosting a Mexican Fiesta Fundraiser. This dinner will celebrate the first phase of our community service project initiative, which is to furnish a multi-use classroom that is being built at the Institute. This classroom will be the first of its kind in Central Mexico and will provide training specifically for care givers, families, and teachers of people with intellectual disabilities, particularly down syndrome.
As part of our Fiesta Dinner we will be holding a silent auction to help raise funds for this much needed classroom. We are hoping we can count on your generosity and that you will be able to donate something for us to use in our auction. All of the proceeds will go to the Institute and will help them to outfit this classroom with much needed
chairs/desks, audio and video equipment, exercise equipment, and computers.
