DESCRIPTION:Evento en linea \nDr. Yane Valdez. Born in Perú Dr Valdez began her research under Dr Gilman’s supervision (John’s Hopkins and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia\, Peru)\, Dr Valdez led a research team investigating the molecular epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori\, a bacterium known as inducer of gastric ulcers and cancer. \nShe then completed her MSc with Dr Townsend at the Biomedical Research Centre at UBC in Vancouver studying fundamental question on how T and B cells communicate to produce an effective immune response. \nShe did her doctoral studies in Dr Finlay’s lab and revealed novel concepts of innate responses to the pathogen Salmonella\, with important implications for human infectious diseases\, infectious colitis\, IBD and intestinal fibrosis. \nAfter 5 years of post-doctoral work in many institutes in UBC she joined StemCell Technologies Inc. leading a team in Innate Immunology. She returned to academia and managed the Research Office at the UBC Faculty of Medicine. \nCurrently\, she is an invited lecturer in many Universities in South America\, and a volunteer for Immunology Without Borders\, chapter of the International Union of Immunological Societies. Leads the EDI chapter of the Canadian Society of Immunologists and volunteers in the Education Committee of the American Association for Immunologists. \nShe volunteers for Covid19 Resources Canada\, BC Lead\, Science up First. She is a champion of Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion and Women in STEM initiatives in Canada and globally\, she recently has been recognized for her advocacy as a “Women Leader of the Americas” International Recognition\, and serves as an advisor for the Centre of Innovation and Leadership for Women (2021-2022). She serves in the Board of Directors of the Anti NMDRA Encephalitis Foundation. \nShe is the founder of @ImmunoLatinXs and Hispanic in Stem Canada and a proud mother of two.

To answer this question\, Latincouver is organizing a virtual panel discussion to share our experiences and build knowledge. \nWe invited experts in this field to lead the discussion: \nAngela Contreras\, Founder and Director of Verapax Solutions Inc.\, Lead researcher for a study on attitudes and expectations among Spanish and Portuguese Speakers in Canada about COVID-19 Vaccinations and Vaccines\, commissioned by Latincouver. \nElena Alvarado\, founder of Between Two Worlds and MSc in Community Health \nSalwa Khan\, a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Toronto \nIngrid Teo\, member of the Latincouver Senior Council \nJorge Filmus\, Senior Scientist\, Sunnybrook Research Institute\, and Professor\, Dept. Medical Biophysics\, Univ. of Toronto. Member of the Latin American Covid-19 Task Force. \nIn this virtual space\, we invite our panellists and our community to reflect on the following: \nHow are vulnerable communities responding to vaccination awareness efforts?\nHow are vulnerable communities being affected by misinformation?\nHow can we improve programs and policies and promote effective vaccination awareness campaigns? \nThis roundtable is an event organized by Latincouver and supported by the Public Health Agency of Canada through the Immunization Partnership Fund (IPF).
