The government of Canada is offering a benefit called CRBC, which stands for Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit and it is administered by CRA (Canada Revenue Agency). The benefit was created to help employed and self-employed people giving them income support because they must care for their child under 12 years old or a family member who needs supervised care who is unable to work. It applies if their facility, school or program is closed due to COVID-19, or because they are at risk of health complications or sick. You may apply up to 26 weeks.
Who can apply
You can check if you are eligible under the section ‘who can apply’ on the government of Canada website following the steps Canada.ca> Benefits> COVID-19 benefits and services> Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB)
How much you can get
If you are eligible for the benefit, the CRCB provides a payment of $500 (before taxes withheld) per household for each 1-week period applied for. After the CRA withholds a 10% tax at source, the actual payment you get is $450 per 1-week period.
How eligibility periods work
The CRCB does not renew automatically. In case you still need the benefit, you must apply for each period separately making sure you are still eligible. You may apply for any eligible 1-week period for up to 60 days after that period has ended.
Keep getting your payments
To keep getting your payments, you must re-apply after each eligible period, up to the maximum of 26 payments per household. You can review your application history in CRA My Account, under “COVID-19 Support Payment Application Details”.
Why you would send CRCB back
If by mistake you applied for the CRCB and you are not eligible, you will have to return any payments you received. You should return any payments you received in 2020 that you’re not eligible for before December 31, 2020.
You must return or repay the CRCB to the CRA if you:
applied for the CRCB and later found that you are not eligible
received a payment in error
received a payment for the same period as another member in your household
are found to have made a fraudulent claim
received one of the following for the same eligibility period:
Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB)
Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB)
short-term disability benefits
workers’ compensation benefits
Employment Insurance (EI) benefits
Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) benefits
