Día de muertos (day of the dead) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico from the beginning of October until Nov 2nd. The multi-day holiday brings people together to pray and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. In Mexican culture, death is viewed as a natural part of the human cycle. Mexicans view it not as a day of sadness but as a day of celebration because their loved ones awaken and celebrate with them.
The Shrine or altar is one of the most distinctive ways Day of the Dead is celebrated. An altar is made in honor of the deceased and can be displayed anywhere so people can see it and drop different offerings such as food, beverages or items that used to be enjoyed by the deceased.
We will create an altar in the Quay Market in North Vancouver for the public to enjoy and learn about this Latin American tradition.
